Indonesian teacher stabs student to death in Singapore (AFP)

Police say a teacher stabbed an eight-year-old student to death after an argument in a school bathroom at a Singapore high school on Monday morning.

The boy, who is Indonesian, had been visiting his teacher and his family in the same school.

A student friend of the two was then stabbed, but police suspect the perpetrator is actually Indonesian.


Police confirmed the stabbing occurred at 6:22am at the Bishan School in Langkawi and said a preliminary inquiry has established that the attack happened "with a school weapon, perhaps a kitchen knife, and caused the death of one pupil, and the injury of the other".

They said it was an isolated act, but that a case of deliberate homicide had been registered as possible.

The murder was not considered an act of terror.

Student friends of the teacher who acted in self-defence said they would go public with their findings on Monday.

They said the man, a teacher of two years at the Bishan School, had been at his desk for the past five minutes talking on his phone as he left for work when the attack took place.


They said the boy would have been "wary" at first about the situation because he always left his phone near the door of the classroom, but eventually turned towards the teacher and asked why he did not leave his phone here.

"It was just such an out of left field," the teacher said.

It was not immediately clear what the teacher had said during that time period, but he said the pair went to the other desk when he went to pick up his mobile phone.

The teachers had not been having a heated debate when the attacker began shouting, "What were you thinking?" and "Get out of the classroom."

"He came right over from the office and came to this desk, with a knife and he stabbed him to death right across the chest," the teacher said.

The teacher asked the man to stand down but the teacher said the man kept coming towards the desk.

"I'm here. I'm here. I'm here. I'm here," he said.

The student who was struck dead later confirmed the boy had been attacked "with an electrician's screwdriver."

Schools spokesman Gautam Tiwari told AFP the school has security cameras but said it did not capture the incident.

He described the incident as "out of character" and said police had been alerted and would provide assistance if requested.
